What is The Shalom Project?

A local non-profit running several programs to assist our neighbors in need. We pride ourselves on our highly committed staff, board of directors, and volunteers serving clients, patients & guests with a spirit of inclusion, compassion, and justice.

INCLUSION

The Shalom Project spirit is one of "doing with" instead of "doing for." People who have lived in poverty are a part of our organization: our board of directors, our staff, and our volunteers.

COMPASSION

Inclusion fosters compassion. We help shoulder the burden of poverty for our clients because we know it is more than lack of financial means. Our hope and goal is that, after each visit, our clients leave feeling their burden lightened.

JUSTICE

We believe every person in our community should have their basic needs met, access to health care, and hope for a brighter future. We aim to improve our community structures, systems, and services.

Our History

Officially a 501(c)(3) since 2006, The Shalom Project has grown from its early days serving the West Salem neighborhood of Winston-Salem to the organization it is today. In addition to our efforts to assist with the basic needs of medical care, clothing and food, The Shalom Project also oversees long term initiatives to engage with and involve the community in our efforts to reduce poverty and improve our city.

Our Mission

The Shalom Project serves and supports those in our community who have been systematically disenfranchised and oppressed. We achieve this through our outreach programming, education, and advocacy.

Our Vision

The Shalom Project envisions a peaceful, diverse, thriving community where people from all walks of life have their basic needs met and are engaged in trusting relationships, which facilitate shared power, propel just efforts, and create compassionate social change.

Our Values

Shalom means “peace, harmony, wholeness, completeness, prosperity, welfare and tranquility.” The Shalom Project is committed to these values, not only for ourselves but also for others. The term, shalom, guides our work, our action, our fight to ensure shalom for all.  In this era of inequity, we address internal and external conditions that inhibit individuals from achieving Shalom.

The Shalom Project is a diverse body supported by the larger community in delivering Shalom through the commitment of time, resources, and financial support. Compassionate connectional relationships are our vehicle as we walk along with our clients and serve them.
